What if...? by Valentina Font

Many years ago my mom grandparents and my

dad parents decided to moved to Venezuela, my

mom was not even born and grandma didn’t too,

same as my dad when they moved. When they

were already set in Venezuela my grandma was

born and she met a guy, they married and then

my mom was born. The same happened to my

dad he was born 3 years before my mom.

Years later they met and fell in love and were

about to get married when they knew, they were

having a baby (me), but they didn’t because my

dad was getting divorce but he wasn’t officially

divorce, then I was born.

What if my grandparents hadn’t decided to move

to Venezuela?

Maybe my grandma hadn’t been born. Maybe my

grandma had never known my grandpa. And my

mom wouldn’t been born, or my mom would have

another dad. My dad wouldn’t have known my

mother and I wouldn’t have him as my dad.

Sports - Guillermo Valles

Sports: Badminton

For the last 3-4 years I have been playing Badminton in Indonesia with my friends, at school we always play together in many forms like single matches or double matches. But we don’t usually play much because instead of training we had to study exams. Each time we train for a tournament we always play single matches while double matches are not usually trained.
Badminton is played on a court marked for both singles and doubles matches. It is played with rackets and shuttlecocks, the game is simple, hit the shuttlecocks to your enemy player’s court to hit the ground. To begin a singles game, players stand in diagonally opposite service courts and the server then serves the shuttlecock underhand from below the waist. The rally continues until someone wins it by hitting a good shot, or until someone loses it by hitting a fault. Faults include hitting the shuttlecock into the net, hitting it outside the court, or hitting it twice with two separate shots before it goes over the net. Top players learn to disguise their shots but remember that only top players can do that.

Badminton is by far, one of my favorite sports because by the years I was good at Badminton & now I hope that I can play it again. I enjoy playing Badminton because it’s a fun & a good exercise sport for everyone. I find it fun because Badminton can be played with four people (two vs. two) Rather then in tennis can only be played one vs. one.

What would happen if Sarmiento didn’t brought teachers to Argentina?

I started thinking if I would be here, in Argentina, if Sarmiento didn’t have had brought European and North American teachers. I started thinking that because my 4th generation grandfather was a European teacher, and he came to Argentina with Sarmiento, and I thought that would be interesting.

Sarmiento brought a lot of teachers from Europe and North America, but what would have happened in he hadn’t do that?  He was very important in Argentinean public education, so, what he did was very important.

It's was a movement for Argentinean people have had education. This is an important event in Argentinean history. Between 1879 and 1893, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento brought a lot of teachers from USA and Europe.

If Sarmiento didn’t have brought teachers to this country, this country would have an alphabet people. It may be a very poor country. People would have been really dump and some people would move to another place. People wouldn’t have work.

What if World War I hadn’t happened?

History happens in past, present and future, so can one affect other? Many things have happened until nowadays, that’s what we know. The wars areaggressive conflicts that have happened, and still to happen, they have changed the world in many ways. These wars included the one of the most important wars, which involved powerful countries; it included the World War I.

In June 1914, a Serbian nationalist assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria in Sarajevo, Bosnia. All different type of occurrences followed the incident, leading by August to the World War I, which involved so called Central Powers against the Allied Powers. The four years of the Great Warsaw bizarre levels of bloodshed and destruction, thanks to bloody warfare and the introduction of modern technology and weaponry such as tanks, chemical weapons, blood banks, x-ray machines and much more.

The causes of this war started with an assassination, but what if Archduke Franz of Austria, who was heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, hadn’t been assassinated by a Serbian nationalist. Then the tenuous peace between Europe’s great powers wouldn’t have collapsed. Then the World War I wouldn't have happened, and so much hatred wouldn't have been passed on, and less people would have died. But would we have evolve that much; would we have the idea of making many useful things, such as the blood bank and x-ray machines? What if, WWI has not only been the war to end all wars, but also the beginning of many military and civilian technologies?

What if WWI has shaped the modern world that we are living in?Was it the worst war of all time, or wouldthere come another?Do the wars bring more good or bad results, are these balanced? Is that what some the ones who survived these murderous battles could be thinking?

Unfortunately it was one of the worst wars, which lead to much death, economic losses and destruction. It also affected the world in many ways. Nevertheless, wars have good effects, and WWIbrought about good effects, as well. Such as the advance and creation of modern technology that changed the world, and correction to terrible injustices. Although wars can have too many bad impacts, it can also have numerous favorable impacts.

What would have happened if mathematics hadn´t existed?

Scientists have long used mathematics to describe the physical properties of the universe. But what if the universe itself is mathematics? According to the cosmologist, Max Tegmark, everything in the universe is part of a mathematical structure. All matter is composed of particles that have properties such as charge and spin, these properties are purely mathematical.

The idea is the observation that nature is full of patterns, such as the Fibonacci sequence, a series of numbers in which each number is the sum of the previous two numbers. One consequences of the mathematical nature of the universe is that scientists could theoretically predict every observation or measurement in physics. Tegmark said that mathematics had predicted the existence of the planet Neptune, radio waves, as well as the Higgs Boson´s particle, intended to explain how other particles get their mass. But what if mathematics hadn´t existed?

Humans virtually  can´t live without knowing anything about mathematics. Since the early beginning of times, math has been necessary to survive. Of course, perhaps in the time of the cavemen they didn`t know anything about numbers, but they contrived to distribute food among their families, and to make a trap to hunt animals; all of this required math .Over time Mathematics was discovered gradually, going from the basics such as the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division that was essential every day to make purchases, sales and  account for our finances,

Current mathematics is essential for knowledge of engineering, architecture, astronomy, etc… which is what mostly has been used over the years. In the absence of mathematics, there would be no houses, there would be no satellites in space that provide us all types of signals as for instance; television, internet, telephone between respondents and other important things. Most importantly for many guys,(exception made for the use of slang ) there were no expert designers of video games, which, believe it or not requires using math software.

However this has never happened because we are a smart and advanced civilization that continues evolving physically, mentally and technologically. Unfortunately, Math is very difficult for me and for most people in the world, but thanks to those people who study as much as science allows us, we are a great and advanced civilization.

What if.....

Sometimes I wonder what would be of me if my parents hadn´t known each other, or If my grandmothers wouldn´t have been pregnant. I imagine a completely different life and I ask myself if it would have been better. My answer unfortunately cannot be exact, I am just able to get into my mind and develop my ideas by wondering anything that could have been changed. So there is where I get to, after thinking for hours I concluded with a real story that hit my parent’s life.

My parents, Diego and Alejandra had lived In Palermo, Buenos Aires all their lives until they got married in 1997.  In the same year, my mother received a work proposal in Australia for 6 months. As my parents guaranteed that it would be successful, my mother accepted the offer. After they completed the 6 months, the empress renewed the contract for one more year. They lived happily in Australia for about 2 years, yet they missed their families and friends so much that they came back to Argentina. What would have happened if they had stayed in Australia forever?

If my parents had thought that life in Australia would have been awesome, I would have known much better English so writings would have been easier, and Literature would have been simpler to comprehend. In addition, I wouldn´t have known all my friends, I would have been accustomed to another culture, therefore I would have celebrated my sixteens with a grandiose party instead of my fifteens, I would have eaten earlier at about six o´clock, and maybe I would have practiced another sport instead of hockey.

In conclusion, I can say that I really would have loved to speak English more fluently and to have a prom party.  Moreover it would have been a beautiful experience to know the Australia´s flora and fauna, like kangaroos, koalas and bluebells. However, I´m pleased in my country since I have met all my friends, who are supporting and helping me anytime. Furthermore I have my family living in Argentina as well, and I always have fun with them, especially with my cousins. As a whole, I think I would like to live in both countries at the same time.
